Chapter Four

Damn, I thought to myself. Shorty was in the bathroom, and I was pretty sure it wasn’t because she had to pee. I didn’t mean to offend her or bring up old bad memories, but we were getting to know each other, and I wanted to know how somebody could dislike Christmas. It was the most liked holiday by majority of people. To know that she had went through something as traumatic was crazy, and it made her husband look even shittier. He knew what today was and he still had not an ounce of compassion for shorty in that store.

Pouring the water out of the bowl for the fish, I opened my cabinet that was closest to the stove and started pulling seasonings out. When the day started, I didn’t think that I would be cooking for the first female ever today. Only people that had ever tasted my cooking was Serenity and my mother. A couple of minutes later, Autumn came walking back into the kitchen and sat down.

“My bad. I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable or nothing like that.”

“No, you’re fine. I lost him two years ago and I’m just now finding ways to cope to be honest. You didn’t ask me in a rude way or anything. It’s fine,” she repeated.

“You want another glass of wine?” I asked noticing that her glass was empty.

“Sure. I probably shouldn’t but to hell with it.”

“I feel that.” I chuckled.

The entire time I cooked for us, Autumn and I talked and got to know each other. This was weird as hell for me because I had never been interested in learning about a woman’s life. All the women I messed with, I knew the two most important things; they had a mouth and a pussy. I didn’t give a damn if they had kids, didn’t care about their past, and I would never invite them to my house. Nobody knew where I lived except Serenity and now Autumn. That was how tight I kept my circle.

Life had been rough for me ever since I could remember. My mom was always at work, and I basically took care of my little sister. Once I was seventeen, I was tired of that shit and took it upon myself to start making some real money to take care of my family. At the age of thirty, I was now established and planning my exit from the game. I wasn’t trying to be in the drug game forever because the longevity was too risky.

My ass wasn’t trying to end up dead or in jail over some money because then I couldn’t even enjoy that shit. It wasn’t worth it.

“What are you thinking about?” Autumn asked, interrupting my thoughts.

We had just sat at the table, and I hadn’t even noticed that my ass was in my own world quiet as hell. It was just mad shit on a nigga mind. Sometimes my past haunted more than I let on and that fucked with me.
